A Summer/Fall Study of Philippians:
The Grace of God in Christ is THE Source of our Joy
God’s Promise of Provision Is Real & True
So Trust in Him…and Act on that Trust
A young woman brought her fiancée home to meet her parents for thanksgiving dinner. After dinner, her mother told her father to find out more about the young man. So, the father invited the fiancée to his study for a talk. The father asked the young man, “what are your intentions for taking care of my daughter?” “Well, sir, I’m a Bible scholar,” he replied. “A Biblical scholar? Hmmm,” the father said. “That’s admirable, but how are you going to provide a nice home for my daughter to live in?” “I will study the Scriptures to the best of my abilities,” the young man replied, “and the LORD will provide for us.”
“And how will you buy her the kind of beautiful engagement ring that her mother and I feel she deserves?” asked the father. “I will concentrate on my studies,” the young man replied, “and the LORD will provide for us.” “And my future grandchildren?” asked the father. “How will you support them someday?” “Don’t worry, sir, God will provide.” The conversation continued like this. Each time the father raised a question, the young man declared that God would provide for him and his soon-to-be wife. Later, the mother asked her husband, “How did it go in there, Honey?” The father answered, “He has no job and no plans, and apparently he thinks that I’m God!”
Thankfully, you and I don’t necessarily have to rely on our father-in-law, or our parents, to provide for us as adults (although sometimes God does use family to help us meet our needs….see I Timothy 5:8). Even in cases like that, however, our provision/sufficiency ultimately always comes from our gracious God, Who is committed to meeting – as He alone knows best – all of your and my needs of body and soul.
This morning’s Old Testament Lesson is one of the many portions of Scripture that speaks about God’s provision. I Kings 17 introduces us to the prophet Elijah and sets the stage for his ministry during a time of great Spiritual upheaval and apostasy throughout the northern kingdom of Israel. This chapter not only talks about some of God’s great miracles, but gives us a number of examples of God’s providence, trusting faith and obedience, the power of prayer, and God’s Sovereign control over life and death. We start with a striking, disciplinary declaration from Elijah to King Ahab that God is about to cause a drought that will lead to a three year plus famine. (The judgment of a drought is significant because it directly challenges the Canaanite god, Baal, who followers erroneously believed that he had the power to control rain and fertility. By declaring that the LORD was going to cause a drought, Elijah was asserting the one, true God’s supremacy over Baal, setting the stage for the eventual Spiritual confrontation that will follow in I Kings 18 on Mount Carmel. One the drought begins, God sends Elijah to a brook in the wilderness that provided him with water. God also sent ravens to Elijah with food for him to survive…..proving to us as well that He can provide for the needs of His people in the most unlikely of ways. When the brook eventually dried up, God instructed Elijah to go to the city of Zarephath (outside Israel to the north, in Phoenicia) where a widow would provide for him. This widow of Zarephath provides us with another outstanding example of Divine providence. Despite her dire circumstances, with only a handful of flour and a small amount of oil left (that she intended to use for her and her son’s final meal…before they died of starvation), she obeys Elijah’s request to first make a small cake for him, and afterward to feed herself and her boy. Her obedience led to an amazing miracle…..because “For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.” (1 Kings 17:16). This is not just a story about people who lived 2800 years ago, and whom God blessed. It should serve to teach you and me today that God’s provision always requires our faith, obedience and gratitude. The widow’s faith and her willingness to share her last meal result in a continuous supply of food, demonstrating that God honors those who – first and foremost – trust and obey Him and His Word.
Our Epistle Lesson, and particularly our Sermon Text, (Philippians 4:19) gives us one of the Bible’s most loved and quoted verses….“And my God will fully supply your every need, according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” As we close out our fall study of Paul’s letter to the Philippians, today’s Epistle reading is filled with themes of joy, gratitude, and Spiritual encouragement. As you know, Paul wrote Philippians while he was under house-arrest in Rome, somewhere around AD 60-62. Despite his dire circumstances, this letter is often referred to as the “Epistle of Joy,” because of its positive tone and frequent exhortations to rejoice regardless of ones circumstances. The congregation in Philippi had a special place in Paul’s heart because they had been particularly supportive of his ministry, both Spiritually and materially.
In our reading, Paul talks about the Philippians’ recent gift to him, expressing his gratitude for their generosity and assuring them that their support was not in vain. In this context, Philippians 4:19 serves both as a promise and a reassurance. Paul is confident that just as the Philippians have met his needs, God will meet their needs. And keep in mind, this promise is not just about material provision but encompasses all aspects of life—emotional, physical and especially Spiritual. He emphasizes God’s reliability and steadfast love for His children as the basis for every believer’s confidence that God has the willingness and ability to provide for His children.
The phrase “according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” is particularly significant, since it indicates that God’s provision of us is intimately connected to our faith-relationship with Christ.
It’s also important for us to note that Paul speaks of “needs” rather than “wants.” Our God, in His infinite wisdom, always knows what is truly necessary for our material well-being and Spiritual growth. Sometimes, your and my understanding of our needs can be limited or skewed by our personal desires and wants. However, we can definitely trust that God, Who sees the bigger picture, will provide what is best for us from both an earthly and eternal perspective. As we meditate on this verse today, may we all be encouraged to rely on God’s all-knowing provision and to live out our lives of faith with gratitude, generosity and joy.
Today’s Gospel Lesson teaches us that our true security in life comes from trusting God’s provision, and from our prioritizing His kingdom over material/earthly concerns, as we reject every inclination to worry as the distraction to our faith that it is. In fact, in this portion of God’s Word Jesus addresses the root cause of anxiety: namely, a lack of trust in God’s care. Here He contrasts human worry with God’s providence. He cites nature’s examples of God’s care for the birds and flowers in order to prove to us that God has the gracious will and the power to support His creation. And, since, we humans are more valuable to God than flowers and birds, we should trust Him even more to always provide for all our needs of body and soul. Most important, of course, is that God wants us to prioritize our Spiritual needs over our material ones…..to seek for His Kingdom (our faith and soul’s salvation)….just as He put our soul’s salvation first by sending His Son to be our Savior.
And, finally, this morning’s Children’s Lesson teaches children of all ages that our God can (and WILL….provided we trust and obey Him…) pour out His overflowing grace into our lives, giving us everything that we need. As that occurs, we can live every day with confidence, giving Him our generous first-fruits offerings, and serving others generously as well. Paul assures us that our generosity should never be based on their own limited resources, but – in true faith – on God’s unlimited ability and commitment to always abundantly provide for us. Consequently, knowing God promises that all our needs in life will be met by Him (as well as our needs for eternity, through Christ), should free us to trust in Him by giving faithful and generous offerings to Him without any fear. After all, God’s promises of provision should always shift our focus from any fears and limitations we might have, to God’s overwhelming sufficiency, so that this knowledge will encourage us to live grateful lives of faithful trust, generosity, and purposeful service to Him as our Savior-God.

Pre-Service Prayer
The day has dawned and duty calls – so many tasks await.
Lord, strengthen me when my spirit falls, or when I hesitate
To do the good I ought to do, to shun each sinful way.
Jesus, forgive the wrongs I’ll do, and keep me safe today. Amen.

Pastor We begin this service in the name of the Father
Congregation Who gave us our lives through His almighty power.
P: And of the Son
C: Who redeemed our lives with His precious blood.
P: And of the Holy Spirit
C: Who gave us eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus.
P: Amen.
Today’s Psalm Psalm 73, selected verses
P: Surely God is good to Israel, to the pure in heart. But as for me, my feet almost slipped out from under me. I almost lost my footing. I even envied the arrogant when I observed the peace of the wicked.
C: For there are no struggles at their death. + Their bodies are sturdy. + They do not have the trouble common to people. + They are not plagued along with the rest of mankind. + Therefore pride is their necklace. +
P They say, “How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?”
C: See, this is what the wicked are like— secure forever, they increase in strength.
P: Have I really kept my heart pure for nothing? Have I kept my hands clean in vain? I have been plagued all day. My punishment comes every morning. If I had said, “I will speak like this,” I would certainly have betrayed the circle of Your children.
C: When I tried to understand this, it was very troubling to me, + until I went to the sanctuary of God. + Then I understood their end.
P: Surely You place them on slippery places. You cause them to fall into destruction. How quickly they come to ruin, completely destroyed by terrors! They are like a dream when someone wakes up. So, when You arise, O Lord, + You will despise them like an illusion.
C: Yes, my heart was bitter, + and I was torn up inside. + I was unthinking and ignorant. + I was a dumb animal before You.
P: Yet I am always with You. You hold me by my right hand. With Your guidance You lead me, and afterward, You will take me to glory.
C: Who else is there for me in heaven? And besides You, I desire no one else on earth. + My flesh and my heart fail, + but God is the Rock of my heart and my Portion forever.
P: As for me, God’s nearness is good for me.
C: I have made the Lord God my Refuge, so that I can tell about all Your works.

Come, oh mighty Spirit, come Make our hearts Your habitation.
Work within and cleanse us from
Sin and guilt and condemnation.
Come to us in times of gladness
Be our strength in days of sadness!
Holy Spirit, like a wind Guide us toward Your heavenly portals.
When we falter, then extend Loving grace to sinful mortals.
Bless us with Your supplication In our moments of temptation!
We cannot by our own strength
Trust in Christ our Lord and Savior.
So dear Spirit, work at length That Your gifts we all might savor.
Bless us with Your gifts of teaching,
Faith, and service, and of preaching.
Lift the veil up from our eyes So we all might see more clearly.
That our treasure surely lies In the Lord, Who loves us dearly.
For He promised us a mansion When He earned for us salvation!
As on that first Pentecost Come to us, our faith inspire.
Grant us strength to reach the lost; May Your will be our desire.
Guide us through our earthly story,
‘Til we live in heav’nly glory! Amen.

We Confess our Sins To The LORD
Pastor We have come together in the presence of God, our Heavenly Father, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But We have disobeyed Him through our thoughts, words, and actions, and deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us now turn to Him, acknowledging our sinfulness and seeking His forgiveness for all our sins. In the words of Jeremiah, we confess:
Congregation Although our sins testify against us, O LORD, do something for the sake of Your name. For our backsliding is great; we have sinned against You.
Pastor In the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, we acknowledge how thoroughly sin fills our lives, even our very being:
Congregation From within, out of our hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from inside and make us ‘unclean.’
Pastor Along with the Apostle John, we recognize:
Congregation If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
Pastor And in the words of David, before the Lord we plead:
Congregation I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are proved right when You speak and justified when You judge. Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Pastor Jesus says to His people: “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven.” Our Savior’s perfect life and sacrificial death have paid for the guilt and penalty of our sins, and for the sins of the whole world. Do you believe this?
Congregation Yes, I believe this.
Pastor Then be assured that you are a dear child of God and an heir of everlasting life. And carrying out my office as a called servant of Christ, and according to His command and authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. May the peace of God rest upon all of you. Amen.
Congregation “We Praise You O God, Our Redeemer, Creator”
We praise You O God, our Redeemer Creator
In grateful devotion our tribute we bring:
We lay it before You, we kneel and adore You;
We bless Your holy name; glad praises we sing.
We worship You God of our Fathers, we bless You.
Through life’s storm and tempest, our Guide You have been;
When perils o’er take us, escape You will make us,
And with Your help, O Lord, our battles we win.
With voices united, our praises we offer;
To You, Great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise.
Your strong arm will guide us, Our God is beside us.
To You, our Great Redeemer, fore’er be praise! Amen.
The Prayer for Today
O Almighty God, + bless the preaching of Your Word + among us this morning + and throughout the world. + Bless us, gathered here, with an added measure of Your Holy Spirit + to make us wise unto salvation through faith in Christ, + to equip us for faithful service to You, + and to fill us with joy in that service. + Also strengthen our faith through Your Word and Sacraments + that we might remain in this one, true Christian faith as long as we live. + We ask this in the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, + Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, + one God, for ever and ever. + Amen.

Today’s Scripture Lessons
Today’s Old Testament Lesson I Kings 17
17 Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, Whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.”
2 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: 3 “Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. 4 You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.”
5 So he did what the Lord had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.
7 Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. 8 Then the word of the Lord came to him: 9 “Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.”
12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the Lord spoken by Elijah.
17 Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. 18 She said to Elijah, “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?”
19 “Give me your son,” Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. 20 Then he cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?” 21 Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the Lord, “Lord my God, let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 The Lord heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. 23 Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!”
24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth.”
This Morning’s Epistle Lesson Philippians 4:10-23
10 I rejoice greatly in the Lord now that you have revived your concern for me once again. Actually, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. 11 I am not saying this because I lack anything; in fact, I have learned to be content in any circumstances in which I find myself. 12 I know what it is to live in humble circumstances, and I know what it is to have more than enough. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, while being full or hungry, while having plenty or not enough. 13 I can do all things through Christ, Who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless, you did well by becoming partners with me in my affliction.
15 You Philippians know that in the beginning of your experience with the gospel, when I left Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you alone. 16 Even while I was in Thessalonica, you sent help more than once for my needs. 17 Not that I am seeking a gift, but I am seeking the fruit that adds to your account. 18 I have been paid in full, and I have more than enough. I am fully supplied since I’ve received from Epaphroditus the things that came from you, a sweet-smelling fragrance, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. 19 And my God will fully supply your every need, according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus. 20 Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever! Amen.
21 Greet every saint in Christ Jesus. The brothers who are with me greet you. 22 All the saints greet you, especially those who are from Caesar’s household. 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

Today’s Gospel Lesson Matthew 6:19-34
19 “Do not store up treasures for yourselves on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up treasures for yourselves in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Because where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So then if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. So if the light that is in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and mammon.
25 “For this reason I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?
27 “Which of you can add a single moment to his lifespan by worrying? 28 Why do you worry about clothing? Consider how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin, 29 but I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will he not clothe you even more, you of little faith?
31 “So do not worry, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear?’ 32 For the unbelievers chase after all these things. Certainly your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
The Apostles’ Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost; Born of the virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate; Was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven; And sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen.

The Sermon Hymn Hymn 234 “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,
the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him,
for he is your health and salvation!
Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,
Joining in glad adoration!
2 Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things
is wondrously reigning
And, as on wings of an eagle,
uplifting, sustaining.
Have you not seen All that is needful has been
Sent by his gracious ordaining?
3 Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully,
wondrously, made you,
Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly
falling, has stayed you.
What need or grief Ever has failed of relief?
Wings of his mercy did shade you.
4 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper
your work and defend you;
Surely his goodness and mercy
shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew What the Almighty can do
As with his love he befriends you.
5 Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all
that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath, come now
with praises before him!
Let the Amen Sound from his people again;
Gladly forever adore him!

And in Whose name we also offer our Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; Give us this day our daily bread; And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; And lead us not into temptation; But deliver us from evil; For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever.
