I Believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator (and Preserver) of Heaven and Earth

The First Sunday after the Festival

of the Holy Trinity

The Third Sunday of the Pentecost Season

June 22, 2025

I Believe in God the Father Almighty,

Creator (and Preserver) of Heaven and Earth

Last week’s worship service focused particularly on the doctrine of God….especially on how God loves and cares for us as our Heavenly Father.   In so doing, we actually began a sermon and worship service series based on the doctrines of the Apostles’ Creed, that will carry us through the Summer months and into the Fall.    Our theme for these sermons and services will be:    “I Believe…..”

In the weeks ahead of us we will have the opportunity to consider a variety of Biblical truths about our God and His relationship with and assurances to us.   We’ll consider the Biblical truths about Christ’s eternal deity as well as His becoming a human in time by being conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to the Virgin Mary.   We’ll examine His righteous life and well as His innocent sufferings and death, in order that He could be our Savior-Substitute in godly living and then could sacrificially die for all our sins, after which He rose bodily from His tomb for the assurance of our salvation.    We’ll also look at His descent into hell, and the significance of that part of Jesus’ exaltation for us.  The blessing (and horror….for unbelievers) of Judgement Day will receive our attention as well.  In addition, we’ll o have opportunities to study again the significance of the Deity and Personality of the Holy Spirit as He works to bring us to – and keep us in – saving faith through the Word and Sacrament.   We’ll speak about the doctrine of the Church (on earth and in heaven).    We’ll examine what the Scriptures teach about the forgiveness of all our sins by God, and our calling as Christians to forgive those who sin against us.    We’ll also consider what the Bible says about our own our vivification and perfection (if Judgment Day doesn’t come during our lifetime), and finally what lies beyond this sinful world for us and all who believe in the Triune God:   eternal life in heaven.   …….In essence, we’re going to go through a Sunday-by-Sunday “Confirmation-Application” class to reconfirm our faith and faithfulness and to recognize again the comprehensive spiritual unity we share based on the Biblical teachings of the Apostles’ Creed.

As far as our “Second Installment” in this series goes, today you and I are going to go back to “where it all began”…..specifically, where our world and we – as God’s special creation/human beings – began.    We’re going to be exploring how and why God created our world, and what that truth should mean for each of us every day of our lives.

That means we’ll be looking closely at the truths that God teaches us about Himself as our Creator and Preserver from the opening portion of the book of Genesis.    Genesis, of course, is a book of “beginnings.”    It records the beginning of the heavens, the earth, and the human race (to which we’ll be giving our attention this morning).    It additionally gives us some important glimpses of other notable beginnings, such as the beginning of sin, the beginning of public worship, the re-beginning through the flood, and the beginning of the nation of Israel, to name a few.   Martin Luther held the book of Genesis in very high regard, saying about it: “there is no more beautiful and loveable book of the Bible.”

In regard to the creation of the world, this first of the Scripture’s 66 verbally (word for word) inspired books clearly affirms throughout its opening two chapters that the universe in which we live is not self-originated, nor is it eternally existing, and it is not the product of spontaneous generation.   All that we see (and everything we can’t see) is the creative work of our gracious, almighty God.   For example, thirty times the name “God” is mentioned in this first chapter through phrases such as these: “God created;”  “God said;”  “God saw;” and “God called.”  In plain opposition to atheism and agnosticism (which foolishly either reject or claim to be uncertain about the existence of God), Genesis proclaims the fact that there truly is a God, in fact He is the Triune God.  And He made all things out of nothing and still preserves everything (including you and me) by the power of His Word.    In opposition to polytheism (the belief that there are many “gods”), Genesis emphasizes that there is only one true, Triune God…and everything else is just a damnable idol.   In opposition to pantheism (the notion that “god” is in everything…and everything is “god”), the first book of the Bible declares that there is a distinctive, discernable difference between the Creator and the things that He created:   that the God in Whom we believe is truly eternal and worthy of our worship…..while, on the other hand, created matter is not eternal and never worthy of our devotion.

Our Sermon Text / Old Testament Lesson this morning is Moses’ inspired account (remember:  the LORD was the only Witness to creation) of the beginning of all things and the origination of our human race.  There’s so much we could emphasize here, for example:  the LORD creating everything out of nothing;  the recurring phrase “and there was evening and there was morning” which affirm the six-day, normal 24-hour day creation (also see Exodus 20:11);  and the involvement of all three persons of the Trinity in the creation (“the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters,”  “let US make man in OUR image,”).

Today’s Epistle Lesson  affirms the involvement of God the Son in the creation of the world.  Of particular interest to us here is the recognition that God’s creation consists not only of what we can see (the “visible”) but also what we cannot see even as it exists (the “invisible,…thrones or powers or rulers or authorities” which are Paul’s way of referring to the spirit-beings which God also created:  the angels).

In our Gospel Lesson for this morning, we’ll consider the familiar words of the Apostle John as he refers to Christ as “the Word.”  John’s obvious emphasis is that Jesus is the Living Word of God Incarnate (i.e., that He is God Who has taken upon Himself our human flesh).   But for our purposes today we’ll also want to see — as Colossians 1 states — that the second Person of the Trinity was involved in the creation of all things (“All things were made by Him and without Him nothing was made that has been made”).

Finally, our Children’s Lesson will ask us all this simple question:  “I believe that God created the heavens and the earth.  Do YOU too?”    God’s Word, as we’ll see today, gives us the right answer.

As We All Prepare for Worship Today,

a Few Reminders are in Order:

*   Parents with small children…..please make use of our nursery and if your child should become restless, a distraction, or loud during the service today.    That way those around you can worship more comfortably and attentively.

*   Before 9:20 a.m.    You are welcome (and encouraged) to visit quietly with those around you in the chapel,

* After 9:20 a.m.     Out of respect for others who wish to quietly prepare themselves for worship, please quietly spend the time leading up to worship by offering the pre-service prayer, listening to the pre- service music, and preparing yourself for worship  by reviewing the “Worship Focus” materials at the beginning of this flyer.

*   Please turn off the ringer off your cell phone.    Also please refrain from “texting” during the worship service, as this distracts both you and your fellow worshipers.

*   If any personal need should arise for you this morning, either our Elders on duty, or our Head Usher (who can be found in the rear of the chapel) will be pleased to meet your needs as they are able. Just ask.

And finally….

*   To our Guests Today  – 1) If you haven’t already done so, please sign our Guest Book in the entryway before you leave us today;

2) Please accept our invitation to join us for our Fellowship Time after

the close of worship today;   and 3) Thank you for being here today.

Please come back again soon!

Our Church’s Purpose and Mission

Grace Lutheran Church is affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, a church body which spans the United States and Canada, and which also operates a number of foreign missions.       “The mission of Grace Lutheran Church, as contained in Matthew 28:19-20, is:  To reach out into Northwest Arkansas with the Gospel of our Lord and Savior in all its truth and purity, and to provide Christian worship, education, and encouragement to all members of our congregation.”

Pre-Service Prayer  Lord God, merciful Father, I thank You that You have safely brought me to this hour of worship.   Through Your Holy Spirit open my heart to the wondrous truths of Your salvation which I will hear this morning, and through the Same, grant new strength and greater confidence in You to my faith.    Bless the preaching and teaching of Your Word both in our congregation and throughout Your Church on earth.   Give power and conviction to Your ministers here and everywhere, that their testimony to Your holiness, sovereignty, and grace may be clear and true to Your revealed Word.  Grant me the grace to bring all my sin-burdens before Your altar and leave them there at Your feet.  Keep me from mere formalism in my worship, from praying with my lips while my heart is far from You, and from failing to personalize Your words of rebuke, instruction and comfort that I will soon be hearing.   Receive my offerings, humble though they are, for the extension of Your kingdom.   And, after this service closes, enable me to live according to Your Word and for Your glory throughout this week.   All this I ask, in the name and for the sake of Your Son, my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Pastor – Bless the LORD, O my soul.  O LORD my God, You are very great;  You are clothed in splendor and majesty, covering Yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.

Congregation He lays the beams of His chambers on their waters.  +  He set the earth on its foundations;  + so that it should never be moved.

P: You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills.  They give drink to every beast of the field;  the wild donkeys quench their thirst.  Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches.

C: You cause the grass to grow for the livestock, and plants for man to cultivate  +   that he may bring forth food from the earth.

C: O LORD, how manifold are Your works!    In wisdom have You made them all;  the earth is full of Your creatures.   + These all look to You to give them their food in due season.

P: May the glory of the LORD endure forever;  may the LORD rejoice in His works –

C: I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;  +  I will sing praise to my God while I have being.  +  May my meditation be pleasing to Him for I rejoice in the LORD.  + Bless the LORD, O my soul.   +   Praise the LORD!

The Opening Hymn     The Morning Sun is Dawning,

To the tune of “The Morning Light Is Breaking”………(CW 566)

vv 1 & 3 adapted from Johannes Nuhlmann’s “Dank Sei Gott in der Hohe”

vv 2 & 4 by cwh, 2001

The morning sun is dawning,    And I thank God once more

Beneath Whose care awaking    I find the night is o’er:

I thank Him that He’s called me     To be His child and heir;

I know, whatever happens    I’m safely in His care.

O Lord of all creation,    Watch over me this day;

In all I do be near me,     For others too I pray –

To You I do commend them:   Our church, our youth, our land;

Direct them and defend them,    When dangers are at hand.

You are the Vine, O Savior,    May we, Your branches be,

Connected to You firmly,     And for eternity.

Your Spirit place within us,     And let His gifts of grace

Empower us to serve You – throughout our earthly race.

So grant us, Lord, Your blessing       That we may do Your will,

No more Your ways transgressing,     Our calling to fulfill;

To go and tell the Good News:    Christ died for all, that we –

through faith in Him, forgiven —  Have heaven eternally.    Amen!

At the Pastor’s invitation, the Congregation will rise as

We Make Confession Of Our Sins To God

Pastor We have come together in the presence of God, our Heavenly Father, Who created us to love and serve Him  as His dear children.    But We have disobeyed Him through our thoughts, words, and actions, and deserve only His wrath and punishment.  Therefore, let us now turn to Him, acknowledging our sinfulness and seeking His forgiveness for all our sins.   In the words of Jeremiah, we confess:

Congregation Though our iniquities testify against us, act, O LORD, for Your name’s sake;     for our backslidings are many:   we have sinned against You.

Pastor In the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, we acknowledge how thoroughly sin fills our lives, even our very being:

Congregation From within, out of our hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy slander, arrogance, and folly.    All these evils come from inside and make us ‘unclean.’

Pastor Along with the Apostle John, we recognize:

Congregation If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Pastor And in the words of David, before the Lord we plead:

Congregation I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.   Against You, You only have I sinned     and done what is evil in Your sight,   so that You are justified in Your words and blameless in your judgment.   Behold I was brought forth in iniquity,    and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Pastor Jesus says to His people:   “If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven.”   Our Savior’s perfect life and sacrificial death have paid for the guilt and penalty of our sins, and for the sins of the whole world.   Do you believe this?

Congregation Yes, I believe this.

Pastor Then be assured that you are a dear child of God and an heir of everlasting life.   And carrying out my office as a called servant of Christ,  and according to His command and authority,   I forgive you all your sins   in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.     May the peace of God rest upon all of you.    Amen.

Congregation “We Praise You O God, Our Redeemer, Creator” (CW 609)

We praise You O God, our Redeemer Creator

In grateful devotion our tribute we bring:

We lay it before You, we kneel and adore You;

We bless Your holy name;   glad praises we sing.

We worship You God of our Fathers, we bless You.

Through life’s storm and tempest, our Guide You have been;

When perils o’er take us, escape You will make us,

And with Your help, O Lord, our battles we win.

With voices united, our praises we offer;

To You, Great Jehovah, glad anthems we raise.

Your strong arm will guide us,   Our God is beside us.

To You, our Great Redeemer, fore’er be praise!    Amen.

We Hear God’s Word

The Old Testament Lesson Genesis 1:1-2:3

1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was undeveloped and empty. Darkness covered the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

3 God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good. He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” There was evening and there was morning—the first day.

6 God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters, and let it separate the water from the water.” 7 God made the expanse, and He separated the water that was below the expanse from the water that was above the expanse, and it was so. 8 God called the expanse “sky.” There was evening and there was morning—the second day.

9 God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear,” and it was so. ?The waters under the sky gathered to their own places, and the dry land appeared.?  10 God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathering places of the waters He called “seas.” God saw that it was good. 11 God said, “Let the earth produce plants—vegetation that produces seed, and trees that bear fruit with its seed in it—each according to its own kind on the earth,” and it was so. 12 The earth brought forth plants, vegetation that produces seed according to its own kind, and trees that bear fruit with its seed in it, each according to its own kind, and God saw that it was good. 13 There was evening and there was morning—the third day.

14 God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to divide the day from the night, and let them serve as markers to indicate seasons, days, and years. 15 Let them serve as lights in the expanse of the sky to give light to the earth,” and it was so. 16 God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set these lights in place in the expanse of the sky to provide light for the earth, 18 to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. God saw that it was good. 19 There was evening and there was morning—the fourth day.

20 God said, “Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds and other winged creatures fly above the earth in the open expanse of the sky.” 21 God created the large sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their own kind, and every winged bird according to its own kind. God saw that it was good. 22 God blessed them when He said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the waters of the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” 23 There was evening and there was morning—the fifth day.

24 God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures according to their own kind, livestock, creeping things, and wild animals according to their own kind,” and it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their own kind, and the livestock according to their own kind, and everything that creeps on the ground according to its own kind. God saw that it was good.

26 God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that crawls on the earth.”

27 God created the man in His own image.

In the image of God He created him.

Male and female He created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 God said, “Look, I have given you every plant that produces seed on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that bears fruit that produces seed. It will be your food. 30 To every animal of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw everything that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. There was evening and there was morning—the sixth day.

2:1    The heavens and the earth were finished, along with everything in them.   2 On the seventh day God had finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had been doing. 3 God blessed the seventh day and set it apart as holy, because on it He rested from all His work of creation that He had done.

The Epistle Lesson Colossians 1:13-20

13 The Father rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, 14 in Whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the Firstborn over all creation, 16 for in Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and unseen, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and all things hold together in Him.

18 He is also the Head of the body, the Church. He is the Beginning, the Firstborn from the dead, so that in all things He might have the highest rank. 19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself (whether things on earth or in heaven) by making peace through the blood of His cross.

after which the Congregation will rise for

The Gospel Lesson John 1:1-14

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through Him everything was made, and without Him not one thing was made that has been made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. 5 The Light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as an eyewitness to testify about the Light so that everyone would believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but he came to testify about the Light.

9 The real Light that shines on everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not recognize Him. 11 He came to what was His own, yet His own people did not accept Him. 12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believe in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. 13 They were born, not of blood, or of the desire of the flesh, or of a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen His glory, the glory He has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Congregation will then be seated as we offer – set to song –

The Apostles’ Creed   melody: “What A Friend We Have in Jesus (CW 411)

I believe in God the Father,   Maker of the heav’ns and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, our Savior, God’s own Son, of human birth.

Virgin born, the Lord incarnate,    Whom the Spirit did conceive,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate;     Our salvation to achieve.

Crucified, was dead and buried,    Down to hell in victory;

From the dead He rose the third day;    Up to heav’n triumphantly.

There at God’s right hand He’s ruling,     By His will the world is led.

He will come to judge the nations,    Both the living and the dead.

I believe in God the Spirit,    In His Church, His chosen band.

They are joined in close communion,    Holy in His sight they stand.

I believe in sins forgiven;    That the dead will rise again;

I believe in life eternal.    Amen!   Amen!   A – – men!

The Children’s Lesson Hebrews 11:3

3 By faith we know that the universe was created by God’s word, so that what is seen did not come from visible things.

I Believe God Created the Heavens and the Earth …..Do You?’

The Sermon Hymn Hymn 234   “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”

1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty,

the King of creation!

O my soul, praise him,

for he is your health and salvation!

Let all who hear Now to his temple draw near,

Joining in glad adoration!

2 Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things

is wondrously reigning

And, as on wings of an eagle,

uplifting, sustaining.

Have you not seen All that is needful has been

Sent by his gracious ordaining?

3 Praise to the Lord, who has fearfully,

wondrously, made you,

Health has bestowed and, when heedlessly

falling, has stayed you.

What need or grief Ever has failed of relief?

Wings of his mercy did shade you.

4 Praise to the Lord, who will prosper

your work and defend you;

Surely his goodness and mercy

shall daily attend you.

Ponder anew What the Almighty can do

As with his love he befriends you.

5 Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all

that is in me adore him!

All that has life and breath, come now

with praises before him!

Let the Amen Sound from his people again;

Gladly forever adore him!

The Greeting

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge

of God the Father, our Creator and Preserver,

of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior,

and of God the Holy Spirit, our Sanctifier.  Amen.

Today’s Responsive Prayer

P: Dear Heavenly Father, once again we have enjoyed the privilege of gathering together in this place to sing Your praise, to worship You, and to hear Your Word.  We praise and thank You for all that You give us each day.  We are not worthy of the many mercies You show us.

C: Bless every person here today, that we might grow in Your grace, and rededicate ourselves to conforming our faith and lives to Your sure Word alone.

P: Daily cover our human faults, frailties, and sins, that they might not hinder the work which You have entrusted to us as Your servants here on earth.    And grant that all our words, our actions, and our intentions reflect our love for the Lamb of God Who has taken away the sin of the world.

C: Keep our sinful instincts and ambitions from dominating our lives + and, instead, empower us through Your Spirit +   to make the crucified and risen Christ   +   the very center of all our worship, faith, and living.

P: Bless our congregation and church body – indeed, Your Church at large throughout the world – by granting them faithful pastors, teachers, leaders, and lay members.

C: Watch over Your missionaries wherever they are, +   at home and abroad   +  and enable them to serve You faithfully and joyfully.   +    Remind us to hold them up regularly in our prayers   +    and to support them generously with our gifts.   +  Let no area of Your harvest field wither and perish   +    because we have failed to do what You require of us.

P: Hear us also, LORD, as we take a few moments to silently offer You our personal petitions and praises.

Silent Prayer

P: Finally,  Lord God, accept our thanks for the tremendous privilege of being called Your children, and of being able to come to You now and at any time in prayer.   Help us to grow intellectually, emotionally, spiritually through Your Word, so that we may be faithful servants for You in our homes, and communities, in our congregations, and as members of Your Church on earth. Mercifully hear our prayer, and bless us one and all, for the sake and in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and rules with You and the Holy Spirit, eternally one God, forever and ever.   And in Whose name we also offer our Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name;   Thy Kingdom come;  Thy will be done    on earth as it is in heaven;    Give us this day our daily bread;    And forgive us our trespasses,    as we forgive those who trespass against us;     And lead us not into temptation;     But deliver us from evil;  For Thine is the kingdom,  and the power,  and the glory,   forever and ever.  Amen.

We Leave With The Lord’s Blessing

The Benediction

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.  Amen.
